Training and Quality Officer

Cambridge, HCA Backlogs

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and well-motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with previous experience in a Specialist Biomedical Scientist role in Cellular Pathology. 

Reporting directly into the Technical Operations Manager, you will bring excellent communication and personnel skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team, in a quality and training role.

Backlogs is a fast-growing business and is a wholly owned subsidiary of HCA Healthcare UK. Backlogs provides a remote cellular pathology reporting service for NHS Hospitals, working with over 40 Trusts and is supported by 110 Consultants throughout the UK.  A small on site laboratory to deliver microtomy services will be open before April 2025 and this role would include delivery of training in this area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • To organise and deliver training to the Backlogs team to support learning outcomes from adverse events in their assigned department(s), ensuring training is supervised or delivered by appropriately trained, competent and qualified staff.
  • To lead the training and development program of new starters.
  • Gain a full understanding of the end to end process within the business, and as such be able to carry out any investigations from a position of understanding the tasks within the organization.
  • To monitor training compliance for staff within the designated area of the business. In collaboration with the Technical Operations Manager and senior team, to ensure staff members complete statutory and mandatory training, and local training and competency assessments as required for their role.
  • To be a member of the HCA Laboratories Training Committee and attend Training Committee meetings. To communicate relevant information to and from these meetings, appropriate to their department.
  • Maintain the overall training and competency documentation.
  • Incident investigation and root cause analysis, including supporting other departments in the business to complete investigations appropriately, ensuring corrective and preventive actions are effective.
  • Work with suppliers (clinical and non-clinical ) to identify the root cause of issues.
  • If required to work on a one to one basis with members of the team to support their understanding and development, such that error is reduced from within their role.
  • To assist with the provision of microtomy services within our new on-site laboratory.
  • To perform any other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with grade and experience. This may include working at other sites (London Head office, or at client sites).
  • Comply with local and national policies (including ISO/IEC 27001) for the safe, secure and confidential processing and management of patient and other information.

Skills and Experience

  • Current HCPC registration
  • Completed the Specialist Biomedical Scientist portfolio in Cellular Pathology
  • Current experience in a diagnostic Cell Path laboratory
  • Previous experience in delivering training
  • Previous experience in incident investigation and delivery of learning outcomes is desirable
  • Excellent communication
