Role – Mental Health Liaison Nurse

Location: Central London, traveling between HCA Hospitals

Full Time: 37.5 hours per week

Salary: £51,488 - £58,000  depending on skills and experience + Benefits (pension, health cover, flexible benefits and excellent career development)
 

The Mental Health Liaison Nurse role will report to the Director of Clinical Operations and will sit within the central Clinical Services Group, a strategic operational group for the whole company. You will also partner with a CQC outstanding mental health provider for supervision, support, and networking.


The Mental Health Liaison (MHL) Nurse Specialist is responsible for supporting patients who may have a mental health need in our inpatient units, throughout their pathway, from pre-admission through to onwards discharge. You will be required to receive referrals from our hospitals and liaise with other health professionals within the system to plan and act on the patient’s care needs, as well as social services and community services.
 

The MHL Nurse will hold a lead role in the management of patients and will be integral in helping shape the service and relevant best practice management pathways. The MHL Nurse is a critical and consistent point of contact for both patients and colleagues in regards to the management of patients with acute mental health needs and will help upskill our teams to manage acute mental health situations. They will act as both nurse and manager, as well as strategic lead for the service.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and management of a patient’s mental health condition whilst a patient at HCA UK – including pre-admission planning and/or managing sudden acute mental health episodes, together with the patient’s multi-disciplinary team and our Safeguarding Lead.
  • Manage a caseload within their own scope of practice and with the guidance and support from the CNO of the facility and the wider clinical team
  • Upskill and train our colleagues to manage acute mental health patient deteriorations and provide advice on management out of hours, in consultation with psychiatrists.
  • Complete risk assessments and provide advice on mental capacity assessments and build links with external inpatient mental health partners
  • Manage challenging or disturbed behaviour, provide advice on medication and participate in discharge planning for inpatients who will require mental health support.
  • Demonstrate safe clinical judgement in evaluating, interpreting and documenting the outcomes of mental health nursing and other interventions including the evidence underpinning clinical practice.
     

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant post registration experience at Band 6 in specialty area (Mental Health)
  • Worked as a nurse within a relevant specialty for a minimum of 3 years post registration
  • Managing complex and difficult emotional situations
  • Experience of development of policies and clinical pathways
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
