We have a brilliant opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist (BMS) in the cancer diagnostics laboratory at Sarah Cannon Molecular Diagnostics (SCMD). Please note, a Trainee Biomedical Scientist with an IBMS accredited degree can also be considered for this role.

At SCMD, we perform a comprehensive range of molecular tests to support the oncology care pathway. The post holder will provide technical laboratory service for all cancer somatic mutation assays offered by Sarah Cannon Molecular Diagnostics. Undertake administrative duties; perform audits and ensure compliance, which are essential aspects of all clinical work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake sufficient training as is required to work under an ISO accredited laboratory performing the day to day laboratory duties required to run the clinical service. This will include the cutting of FFPE specimen sections, preparation of H&E slides, DNA/RNA extractions, preparation of samples for molecular analysis, performing PCR-based assays and next generation sequencing assays.
  • To participate in any other laboratory duties as required. These are likely to include (but not be limited to) stocking & supplies management, receiving deliveries and recording lot numbers/expiry dates prior to ensuring appropriate storage.
  • To perform and participate in those cleaning measures and protocols that are in place in order to keep the risks of contamination to an absolute minimum and also to ensure that the laboratory operates as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • To assist all staff in maintaining high scientific and quality standards within the section and in accordance with Health & Safety regulations and ISO 15189 standard.
  • Assist with training of other staff members.

What you’ll bring:

  • HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Applicants should have experience in a wide range of molecular diagnostic techniques.
  • Experience of working in a team in a busy laboratory, carrying out routine laboratory procedures.
  • The Laboratory relies heavily on information technology, and applicants must have good basic computer skills and be willing to develop these in to more specialist applications as required.
  • Applicant must be committed to ongoing self-development and to the consistent delivery of a high-quality clinical service.
  • High level of concentration and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to be flexible with duties when needed.
