Deputy Service Lead – Cytology

Fixed Term Contract 12 months

We have a brilliant opportunity for a Deputy Service Lead (Cytology) to join the team as maternity leave cover at HCA Laboratories in Shropshire House central London.  HCA Laboratories has over 35 years’ experience in providing pathology services, for acute care in our HCA Hospitals, IVF Clinics, Insurance work, healthcare screening and GP services. We cover all disciplines in pathology including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, and microbiology and serology, with each laboratory equipped with the best available analytical instrumentation.

As a Deputy Service Lead you will perform Cytology duties with more complex investigations/analysis required. The post holder will supervise and perform duties as part of the Cytology Laboratory Team and report to the Cytology Service Lead.  You will be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist, with experience in working in a busy laboratory at a senior level.

You will support and lead the team to perform the speedy and accurate processing of samples, validate results and to assist the Department Head in the smooth running of the department as required. You will perform a high-quality analytical role, enabling the provision of a comprehensive pathology service for laboratory users.

Key Duties

  • Support with the leadership of the Cytology Department under direction of Department Head.

  • Perform timely and accurate processing of samples and perform Cytology laboratory techniques in accordance with departmental approved SOPs.

  • The use of skills, theory of Cytology, and knowledge to provide a high quality and effective Cytopathology laboratory service.

  • Be responsible for running the section and any delegated tasks involved in the day-to-day organisation and delivery of a clinical pathology service with high standards of patient care

  • To lead & assist all staff in maintaining high scientific and quality standards within the Cytology section and in accordance with Health & Safety regulations and UKAS 15189 standard

What you’ll bring:

  • Hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cytopathology/Cellular pathology.

  • 5 years post HCPC registration

  • MSc educated

  • Member/Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences

  • Hold evidence of, and continue to demonstrate continual personal/professional development ensuring up-to-date knowledge and working to high professional standards
