The Deputy Head of Education & Clinical Training is a senior and pivotal role within the department by providing professional, clinical, and educational leadership, advice, and contribution to champion, establish and deliver HCA clinical education programmes across all UK campuses.
Along with deputizing for the Head of Education & Clinical Training, the post holder will have direct management responsibility for a range of functions, as well as specific areas of responsibility including:
- Policy oversight and development
- Education quality assurance and governance
- Education and training
- Lead, develop, empower and support a team of Site Based Clinical Practice Educators.
In addition to building networks and relationships across the organisation, the post will also have an external focus in developing networks nationally to learn from and share best practice, and locally ensuring appropriate connections across the private and public sector.

What you’ll do:
Operational Management
- Design, develop and deliver departmental activity that supports HCA UK Operational plans, organisational strategic objectives and aligns to the continuing transformation of HCA UK.
- Deliver the in-year education and development priorities as appropriate to role and agreed with the Head of Clinical Education and Clinical Training.
- Contribute to HCA UK reporting and recording processes through Board/Committee papers and regular data returns e.g., Subject Matter Committees, QCOR & Clinical Council Committee.
- Lead the education and training needs analysis and delivery for HCA UK wide projects.
- Deputise for the Head of Clinical Education & Clinical Training, contributing to the clinical education & workforce strategy, developing, and writing reports, and seeking opportunities for professional development across HCA UK and beyond.
- Establish an Education Framework that supports prioritisation, planning, delivery, and ongoing evaluation of core clinical skills, and essential to role learning programmes for Nursing, Midwifery and AHP’s.
- Management of CPD activity - Ensuring resources and finances within this area of responsibility are managed effectively and appropriately, within budget constraints and in line with organisational priorities, policy guidelines and procedures.
- Ensure that patients and their interests are at the heart of everything we do.
- Build and develop an effective team by providing constructive guidance to immediate reports. Provide direct line management and leadership for the team, this includes responsibility for recruitment, career development, performance, and work evaluation.
- Oversee the management of the education and training data bases and records within the Professional Development workstreams, ensuring fit for purpose, reporting, efficiency, and data quality.
- Work closely with the Head to ensure that systems are in place to record, and monitor income and expenditure.
- Provide active representation and engagement at internal and external stakeholder forums including NHS England, and Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s), Academic Institutions (AEI’s) and other Education Providers.
- Work with a wide range of internal and external key stakeholders and analyse information from various sources to ensure HCA UK has the capacity, capability, and quality requirements for current and future professional workforce education
- programmes.
- Responsible for ensuring programmes of work are aligned to, and successfully delivers, HCA UK departmental objectives, KPI’s and regulatory compliance.
- Lead on the identification, and collation of data and information to demonstrate the benefits and value of the workstreams within their portfolio.
- Lead on the analysis of data and information to identify trends, patterns and risks and ensuring all risks related to the professional development and clinical education workstreams are communicated and action plans to mitigate identified
- risks are designed and implemented and tracked to completion.
- Responsible for evaluation of learning and staff experience - measured via Vital Voices survey etc.
Education Commissioning
- Support the Head of Clinical Education and Clinical Training with the operational, financial, and business management of the Professional Development and clinical Education workstreams, including internal and external income streams. Educational scoping demands for academic programmes and the allocation and monitoring of commissioned places.
- Lead on the collation and submission of budgetary reports as required
Professional Practice
- Demonstrate an awareness of professional accountability and responsibility and duty of care and work towards the provision of support and education provision for less experienced and non-registered practitioners on the implications for practice.
Research Evidence-based Practice (EBP)/Quality Improvement (QI)
- Regularly review the service provision to ensure it remains relevant, innovative, and efficient and underpinned with research and evidence-based practice in support of achieving ongoing excellence in education.
- Introduce innovative ways of working to the service that incorporate digital technologies with a view to simplifying, streamlining, and achieving cost efficiencies, and new models of learning that will support and enhance knowledge, skills, and competency development of our clinical workforce.
Career Development
- Responsible for scoping, designing and where appropriate implementing educational development programmes for registered professionals. Work closely with our Organisational Development Apprenticeship Team and advise on Health Care Support Worker development plans as required.
- Contribute towards workforce planning initiatives and deliver strategies to ensure provision for development of new roles appropriate to this workstream.
What you’ll bring:
- Active registration with the NMC or the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- United Kingdom recognised Degree in relevant subject.
- Educated to Master's level in relevant subject area or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in a specialist area
- Relevant education qualification (PG Cert) or equivalent experience at a senior level
- To be certified PRINCE 2 Practitioner or equivalent project management experience
- Demonstrable experience of leading leadership activities/programmes
- Demonstrable leadership experience and significant management experience at a senior level
- Significant experience of managing, supervising, developing and motivating staff in a team context
- Experience in extracting, analysing and presenting complex information in simple terms to range of stakeholders
- Experience of writing and presenting reports at all levels including Board level
- Experience of working within an education environment
- Experience of providing effective coaching for individual
- Adaptable and the ability to work flexibility dependent on circumstances
- Facilitation of presentations and team exercises
- To promote and demonstrate commitment to our values and behaviours
- Skilled in building relationships with senior roles
- Demonstrable networking skills and the ability to identify and engage key service stakeholder
- Lead and work as part of a team, taking all views into consideration
