Medical Laboratory Assistant (Grade 4)– Specimen Reception
Birmingham, The Harborne Hospital
37.5 hours per week

Shifts: Monday to Friday between 07:00-21:00 (7.5 hour shifts). Regular weekend work too.
Up to £28,500 dependent upon experience

We’re looking for an Medical Laboratory Assistant (Grade 4) to join our CSR team on a permanent basis.

As an Medical Laboratory Assistant, you’ll work as part of a close-knit team to provide timely service to all of our stakeholders at The Harborne Hospital. Please note, this role will require some initial travel to London to aid in your training.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • The provision of a Specimen Reception at The Harborne Hospital

  • The efficient and accurate receipt and order entry of laboratory specimens

  • Triage of samples to check for location of processing depending on urgency of required results and discipline

  • Process samples for sending to HCA London Labs and referral labs

  • Assist with client enquiries and results

  • Liaise with the technical departments

  • Be the source of expertise for advising on sample types and test mnemonics

  • Distribute samples to processing location (UHB or London Labs), prioritising samples as necessary

  • Package and organise delivery of samples for London laboratories

  • Monitor courier pick up

  • Answering telephone enquiries

  • Understand test requirements

  • Work unsupervised within the department

  • Loading and unloading samples onto the blood culture analyser
