Location - The Portland Hospital, London

Contract Type - Permanent

Hours- Part time hours 22.5hrs (Day allocation of part time work pattern can be negotiated.)

Salary Range- Competitive dependent upon skills and experience. This post is equivalent to NHS Band 7

Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our multidisciplinary therapies team in providing assessment and therapy services to infants, children and young persons who present with acquired or developmental conditions impacting on their communication, eating, drinking or swallowing.

The role will predominantly focus on the development and provision of a high-quality service to children and families accessing support through the Children’s Therapies Service outpatient program. There will be opportunity to participate in the inpatient neuro-rehabilitation and acute programs when the service need arises.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist communication assessment and intervention with infants, children and young persons presenting with a wide range of underlying diagnosis including neurodevelopmental, neurological, respiratory, cardiac, and genetic conditions.

  • Assess and provide intervention to, or appropriately refer if not dysphagia competent, infants, children and young persons with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties. This may include instrumental evaluation by Videofluoroscopy Swallow Study.

  • Develop goal directed care plans using evidence-based practice and specialist knowledge, in collaboration with patients’ and their families.

  • Use excellent communication skills and effective partnership working within the multidisciplinary team.

  • Identify service improvement and growth opportunities, and collaboratively lead and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of service activities.

  • Provide support to the Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist to achieve department objectives.

  • Provide supervision to speech and language therapy and multidisciplinary colleagues.

  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on own performance and a commitment to continuous professional development.

  • Adopt a flexible and dynamic approach to patient care that supports the team to provide high quality service across all hospital programs.

Skills & Experience

  • Professional qualification in Speech and Language Therapy and Registered member of HCPC.

  • Extensive experience and specialist clinical skills in one or more of the following clinical areas: neurodevelopmental disorders, neurological presentations, alternative and augmentative communication, or paediatric dysphagia.

  • Experience supervising and supporting the development of colleagues.

  • Competency with paediatric dysphagia and Videofluoroscopy Swallow Study completion is desirable but not essential.
