Job - Play Specialist
Location - The Portland Hospital, London
Contract Type - Permanent, full time hours 37.5hrs
Salary Range- Competitive dependent upon skills and experience.

As the Play Specialist you will be are responsible for providing a high standard of care to all patients in need of the service. The service spans the paediatric wards, neurorehabilitation unit, MRI department, pre-admission clinics and day care unit. You will draw on your knowledge and skills (play preparation, distraction therapy and post procedural play skills) to support the service in line with the NAHPS code of professional conduct and hospital policies.

Duties & Responsibilities
To provide high quality, holistic play service for all children / teenagers and their families across HCA, enabling them to feel safe and at ease within the hospital environment.
To maintain a safe, child focused environment where play can occur naturally.
To use theoretical knowledge and evidence based practice to plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic play interventions.
To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
To undertake play assessments and devise play programmes for children and young people in hospital, according to their individual needs and as part of the overall care plan.
To use knowledge and understanding of child development to contribute to assessments and overall, long-team care planning in relation to therapeutic play needs.
To plan and implement individual therapeutic play interventions, to include preparation for invasive and non-invasive procedures, distraction therapy and post procedural play.
To monitor, evaluate and modify therapeutic interventions in order to measure child’s progress and ensure effectiveness of care plan.
To work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to meet the overall care plan for children and young people who have complex needs or life limiting conditions.
Skills & Experience
Experience of working with children/ young people in a hospital environment.
Foundation Degree in Healthcare Play Specialism.
Level 4 Diploma in Specialised Play for Sick Children and Young People or equivalent.
Knowledge of current best practice in hospital play, including cultural needs, safeguarding, diversity and equal opportunities.

Internationally renowned for clinical excellence, The Portland Hospital is the only independent hospital in London and the UK entirely dedicated to women and children. Our inpatient and outpatient specialties reflect this providing clinical expertise in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Women`s Health.
The Paediatric department has been consistently growing over the past few years, almost doubling since 2008. We have 45 inpatient beds + 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced medical and surgical care, including a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which reflects the acuity of the children who are admitted to our hospital. The ratios for care on the wards are 4:1 Patients:Nurses during the day and 3:1 overnight unless patients require 1:1 care.
