Location - The Princess Grace Hospital, London

Contract Type - Permanent, full time hours 37.5hrs

Job Description

As a key member of the Pharmacy team, the Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing innovative leadership to the pharmacy technical team. Main responsibilities include:

  • Being an effective leader and having excellent communication skills, paying attention to detail and having a desire to contribute towards developing the hospitals pharmacy services.

  • To lead, manage, develop and support the Pharmacy Technician staff on all aspects of non-clinical pharmacy operations including technical and dispensary services to ensure a high quality, innovative and up-to-date services is provided that meets the needs of all patients at the hospital.

  • To assist in the planning, implementing and evaluating the work of the pharmacy technician team to ensure operational pharmacy service needs are being met to a high standard

  • Lead on pharmaceutical procurement, ensuring appropriate purchasing, accurate stock control and prompt revenue capture within the dispensary and in clinical areas in line with HCA pharmacy contracts.

  • Promotion of excellent pharmaceutical care for all patients including the safe and effective provision of patient medication

  • To assist in the management and development of Medicines Management and other Clinical Governance initiatives as requested by the Pharmacy Manager

  • To participate in multidisciplinary teamwork, helping to motivate staff and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Having the ability to multi-task, deal with queries and escalate to the Pharmacy Manager when necessary.

  • To participate in the revision and development of local dispensary policies and SOPs.

  • To ensure relevant audits are performed to improve pharmacy service provision.

  • Final checking of clinically screened dispensed prescriptions (Accredited Checking Technician – ACPT qualification essential)

We are a friendly department providing high quality patient focused care. Our Pharmacy Technicians provide a range of services including: dispensing for inpatients, outpatients and discharge; medicines safety; training; procurement; medicines management and final checking.

Skills and experience

  • Applicants must have a BTEC /NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy services or an equivalent recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification.

  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

  • Extensive relevant hospital experience

  • Experience in leading, managing, motivating and leading by example within a team.


  • Hospital based post qualification experience. Experience in using Meditech and Omnicell. Understanding of inventory control and purchasing, Accredited Checking experience and Hospital medicines management ward based experience.
